I am disgusted by the celebration of war death benchmarks by Main Stream News
media. I am equally frustrated that none of New Media gets it to the point of
rational response!
I am offended at the continued chorus of backhanded remarks of the “tremendous
loss of our young men in Iraq” by talk show callers. At best the
"Compassionate Conservative" talk show hosts digress into a no win
"is it worth it" argument with their callers.
Check the census records for yourself.
True up these rough Military Service death numbers to actuals and you will
understand my point. The following rough calculation computes to 453 per 100,000
per year. (100,000 target sample size /150,000 soldiers times 1,700 deaths
divided by 30 months since the war began times 12 months in a year.)
The bottom line is that the death rate per 100,000 per year for 55 to 64 year
old males in the US is 1,162 (CDC reports) or more than twice the death rate of
our service men in Iraq/Afghanistan.
Even the average death rate for 45 to 54 year old males is 548 per 100,000,
still higher than the rate of our military losses.
In fact combined Cancer and Heart Disease mortality rates are around 500 per
100,000, similar to that our service men have incurred in Iraq/Afghanistan.
Others speaking agenda rather than fact try to compare this conflict to Vietnam.
NOT!! Vietnam rate of loss was 15 times as great!
This is not to be-little our military losses as every one is tragic. So was the
loss of my niece to a drunk driver, the traffic flagman in Denver to an out of
control car, the family of 4 that died yesterday in a crash at the Centennial
airport, the Ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park, the Washington State
professor whose sinus operation penetrated his brain last week..... etc.
My step son graduates from Marine boot camp Sept 16 and I expect him to be in
Iraq by Christmas. Yes, I am concerned. I was every bit as concerned every time
the other 4 kids headed up the I-25 Autobahn from Denver to CSU, UNC or the
University of Wyoming. And, I was far more concerned the last 4 years every time
my soon to be Marine went out with the boys.
